In 1998, AIPL had the vision that copy management, including digital rights management (DRM) and digital watermarking (DWM), should be user friendly, simple and efficient while being secure. AIPL developed a copy management system, related technology and IP, including numerous patent applications. AIPL is looking to license its technology and IP to help expand the usage of user-friendly and secure content.
The system gives the consumer a sense of ownership of their content. Music is about emotion, and AIPL’s system keeps the emotion linked to the music. After many battles, simple copy management is starting to appear such as with Apple iTunes FairPlay and Windows Media Player DRM.
More specifically, AIPL's copy management system provides secure distribution of compressed audio and video, including MP3, Windows Media audio (WMA), Real and Apple iTunes AAC audio, MPEG-1, -2 and -4 video, and Windows Media Video (WMV). AIPL’s system is the best compromise for consumers, record labels, the consumer electronic industry, artists, and digital distributors. Its advantages are that the system is secure, user-friendly, and inexpensive to implement. The audio remains portable and contains links for buying. The distribution system requires minimal overhead. The players require no or few modifications. And technical support is minimal. Most importantly, the system allows secure players to play existing MP3, and can be designed to allow legacy players to play secure MP3s.
AIPL has assigned the IP to Digimarc, but has sub-licensing rights. Currently, the following patents have issued: 6,868,497, 6,963,884, 7,055,034, 7,127,744, and 7,197,156, and many more are pending.
